2014-2015 PROGRAM KICKOFFS
Yes, it’s almost time to kick off another great Scouting year! Time for some information AND Inspiration! The program kickoff is a great way to find out about all the upcoming events, activities and training opportunities for your Scouts and your leaders! A copy of the 2014-2015 Council Calendar will be available for all in attendance. Then your leadership can plan their unit activities with training dates and council/district events in mind.
Program Kickoffs are scheduled in each district during the month of July. Check below for the one nearest you, or the one that fits best with your schedule! It’s not required to go to your district’s kickoff if another night is better for you. But we certainly want folks from your unit at one of these events.
Don’t say you didn’t get information or hear about a particular event or activity. Make sure someone from your unit is in attendance to get all the information and bring it back to your unit! All registered adults and interested parents are invited to attend. We will be serving dinner, so an accurate count is crucial. Notification will be mailed to all Unit Leaders and Committee Chairs. All meetings begin at 6:30.
District Date Location
8 Rivers July 17 Chicken Delight, Ocilla
Alapaha July 24 Copeland Conference Center, Camp Patten
Chehaw July 31 Avalon United Methodist Church, Albany
The South Georgia Council Needs Your Help! Only half of the registered adults in our council are current in their Youth Protection Training! To top that off, 25% of our registered leaders have NEVER taken Youth Protection Training, even though it is supposed to be done within 30 days of becoming a registered adult! We, as adult members of the BSA, are required to recertify YPT every 2 years.
Please start with yourself. Log into your myscouting.org account to check the status of your training. Even if your YPT is still valid, but maybe about to expire, go ahead and retake it. Then Unit Leaders and Committee Chairs can log into my.scouting.org (notice the . (dot) between my and scouting) to check the status of all registered adults for their unit. Please encourage your leaders to get this training done - for the sake of our Kids!
Also, Leader Specific Training for ALL Cub Scout positions is available online! While we once again will offer this training in a “live” setting in the fall, adults who are leaders now and have not been trained can go online at myscouting.org and take that training as well. As above with YPT, print out the certificate at the conclusion of the online training and send it to Juanelle King so she can verify that it is there or manually put it in!
For all online training, please make sure that your member ID# is attached to your profile. As we all know: Every Boy Deserves a Trained Leader! Let’s make that happen for them! Also, help the South Georgia Council lead the way in YPT so our boys are safe!
2015 WORLD SCOUT JAMBOREE
The 2015 World Scout Jamboree is now accepting applications via its website, www.scouting.org/worldjamboree The 23rd World Scout Jamboree will be held Tuesday, July 28 through Saturday, August 8, 2015 in Kirara-hama, Japan. Join over 30,000 Scouts and leaders from 161 countries. It is unlike any Scouting activity you have ever experienced.
MAJOR RECHARTER CHANGE
A change in the reporting of membership data on national membership reports will begin effective January 1, 2015. Starting then a unit that has not reregistered by its expiration date will be considered “separated” and immediately dropped from BSA’s membership reporting. There will no longer be what we now call a lapse period for units that do not reregister on time. This is also a change in the way we currently report membership totals. Currently a lapsed unit’s membership continues to be counted for 60 days in council membership totals.
The new definition will begin with units that have an effective date of January 1, 2015. This means that units with a December 31, 2014 expiration date will be included. Volunteers will retain access to MyScouting, MyScouting tools, Internet Rechartering and Internet Advancement for 30 days after their unit has expired and become separated.
A separated unit will have 12 months to reregister as a separated-reregistered unit. Once a separated unit has been reregistered the unit will be included on membership reports starting in the business month the recharter was posted.
