High Adventure

Scouting America’s National High Adventure program offers some of the most exciting outdoor experiences available to youth and adult leaders. These programs challenge participants to develop leadership, teamwork, self-reliance, and outdoor skills while exploring some of North America’s most spectacular wilderness areas. The four National High Adventure Bases each provide a unique experience designed to take Scouting to the next level.

Philmont Scout Ranch – New Mexico

Philmont Scout Ranch is Scouting America’s premier backpacking destination, covering more than 200 square miles of rugged mountain wilderness in northern New Mexico. Participants embark on multi-day treks through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, carrying their gear and traveling from camp to camp. Along the way, crews experience activities such as rock climbing, horseback riding, conservation projects, blacksmithing, and living-history programs. Philmont is known for building confidence, endurance, leadership, and lasting friendships.

Northern Tier – Minnesota and Canada

Northern Tier is the oldest of Scouting America’s High Adventure Bases and is renowned for wilderness canoeing and winter camping experiences. Scouts paddle through pristine lakes, rivers, and forests in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and the Canadian wilderness. Participants learn advanced outdoor skills, teamwork, navigation, and self-sufficiency while experiencing the beauty of the north woods. Winter programs offer opportunities for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and cold-weather camping.

Florida Sea Base – Florida Keys

Sea Base offers a one-of-a-kind maritime adventure focused on the ocean environment. Programs include sailing, scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and island camping. Participants gain hands-on experience in seamanship, marine ecology, and teamwork while exploring the waters of the Florida Keys and surrounding areas. Sea Base is ideal for Scouts who enjoy life on the water and want to experience adventure from a different perspective.

Summit Bechtel Reserve – West Virginia

Located in the mountains of West Virginia, the Summit Bechtel Reserve is home to high-energy adventure programs and the National Scout Jamboree. Activities include whitewater rafting, ATV riding, mountain biking, rock climbing, ziplining, skateboarding, and canopy tours. The Summit combines outdoor adventure with state-of-the-art facilities, providing unique opportunities for Scouts to test their skills and push beyond their comfort zones.
